DEBORD, Ky. — A Maryland woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs in to the U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy, in Martin County.

A state trooper was called to the prison after staff reported seeing Kandy Leigh Wagner, 41, of Baltimore, passing balloons to an inmate she was visiting.

Wagner reportedly refused to answer questions from police, but the inmate she was visiting admitted to having swallowed four balloons filled with THC wax that she had given him. Police ordered the inmate to be taken to the hospital to have the balloons extracted or, if that proved unsuccessful, to have him placed in a dry cell until they passed naturally.

Wagner was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree promoting contraband, a felony punishable by 1-to-5 years in prison. She is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, in Paintsville, on a $5,000 cash bond.
