Yes, Australia has implemented a world-first law banning social media for users under 16, effective December 10, 2025, requiring platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to deactivate these accounts to protect children from harmful content, although some teens are already finding ways to bypass it.

The government mandates platforms take “reasonable steps” for age verification or face large fines, aiming to reduce screen time and exposure to cyberbullying, self-harm content, and predators, with parents unable to consent for younger children. 

Several groups have grown larger backing a similar ban in their states and in the U.S.
