On Sunday, September 12, The First United Methodist Church celebrated Heritage Day (174 years) and during the service honored “Miss Jean” (Roberts) Carter of Louisa, the oldest living member of the Church.
Miss Jean is 93 years young. She was the first of 13 children born to Everett Roberts and Cleora (Moore) Roberts. The family had a farm on Little Blaine Creek in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Since the family was so large the older children need to “help out.”
Jean started living with a family as a housekeeper and cook while she was still in high school.
Miss Jean started attending Louisa First United Methodist when she was in high school. She has served in numerous positions in the church. Until 2012, she taught children’s Sunday School, a position she loved, and today, she is still the children’s favorite friend at the church. She is, and has been, a mentor to many young Christians and a “Spiritual Mother” to many who look to her for guidance and encouragement.
Miss Jean is active in United Methodist Women (UMW) and has served in various UMW positions during her membership. She still participates in the famous “Cheesy Potato Soup” sales that take place in February and November each year, where over 500 quarts of soup are sold.
In addition to her church activities, she is also a member of Eastern Star and has served as an election official for many years.
Miss Jean is a well-known, talented seamstress. She has sewn for many residents of Louisa and her family. In addition, some of her personal projects include making simple dresses for missionaries to give children in need, Christmas costumes for children’s plays, and lap quilts for the nursing home residents. During the recent COVID crisis, she has made hundreds of masks for school children and adults at no cost.
She has two children, Patricia Webb of Richmond Ky; and Edward (Judy) Carter of Goose Creek, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Rob Webb of Georgetown, Ky; Nathan (Stacy) Carter and Stephen (Alaina) Carter, all of Pawley Island, South Carolina; and three great-grandsons, Tyler Webb (currently serving in the Air Force in Kuwait); Blaine Carter, and Mason Carter.
Miss Jean enjoys working Sudoku puzzles and seek-a-word puzzles. She is an expert “Chicken Foot” domino player. She loves to play Phase 10 and has earned the title, “Wild Card” Jean.

Such a sweetheart
I have known Jean Carter since way back n the good ole ‘70’s!! I remember her working @ Fine Arts, a store that me & my dear sweet Mother loved to shop @!!!!! Jean is so sweet, she loved my Mother too who we lost n July & are still very sad about, I miss my Mother so much. Thanks Jean for visiting my Mother when she wasn’t able to come to church.
