FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 1, 2016) – Nearly two thirds of Kentuckians who participated in a mock election at the Kentucky State Fair over the last two weeks support Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes’ plan to offer early voting in the Commonwealth’s elections.
“Results from our State Fair polls confirm what we regularly hear from Kentucky voters – that they are more than ready for the opportunity to cast their ballots early,” said Grimes. “Unfortunately, the Kentucky Senate did not act on our legislation that would give Kentuckians that opportunity, which passed the House with bipartisan support earlier this year. We will be backing that bill again, and it’s time that it’s made law.”
Sixty-five percent of the voters who participated in the Secretary of State’s mock election at the office’s State Fair booth said they support allowing all eligible Kentucky voters to cast absentee ballots in-person without an excuse before Election Day.
Grimes backed early voting legislation, House Bill 290, before the General Assembly earlier this year. The legislation carried the endorsement of Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett (R) who joined Grimes to speak before a House committee on the bill. He told lawmakers that his state sees tremendous success with its early voting program.
“I encourage all Kentuckians who support early voting to contact their county clerks and ask them to support our plan,” said Grimes. “They should also call or email their state legislators and tell them that it’s time to pass this important election reform.”
