llouise Short is Area 8 winner in Jim Claypool  Conservation Art contest

FRANKFORT—Louisa East student Ellie Short was honored in the 2024 annual Jim Claypool Art and Writing Contest at an awards ceremony in Frankfort at the Capitol Rotunda on Friday, March 7, 2024.

Ellie, a 3rd-grade student at Louisa East Elementary, was recognized as the Area 8 winner in the art contest. The Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts and Kentucky Farm Bureau sponsored the event.

Short’s work was one of over 32,000 entries from 81 counties across the state.

The art contest is for students in grades 1-5 and the writing contest is for students in grades 6-12. The contest started in 1974 as a way to educate our children on the importance of good stewardship practices of our soil, water, air, and forests. Using the knowledge they gain on the theme that changes each year, they are asked to transform that knowledge into either an art piece or an essay.

The 2024 contest theme is “PROTECTING THE FOREST TOGETHER” Forestry and Forest Health, which helped students learn about how important forest health is for Kentucky.

Members of the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts, Kentucky Division of Conservation, and Kentucky Farm Bureau presented certificates at the ceremony.
