Addiction Recovery Care Recognizes National PTSD Awareness Day: Honoring the Invisible Wounds of Trauma and Addiction
Louisa, KY — (June 27, 2025) – June 27th marks National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day, a time to shine a light on the often invisible wounds carried by millions of Americans. At Addiction Recovery Care (ARC), we honor this day by recognizing the profound connection between trauma and substance use, and reaffirm our commitment to helping individuals heal from both.
Behind many stories of addiction is an untold story of trauma. PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, such as combat, abuse, serious accidents, or sudden loss. However, trauma doesn’t always arrive in dramatic fashion. It can stem from years of neglect, chronic stress, or growing up in an unpredictable or unsafe home. Left untreated, trauma can lead many to turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain, silence the memories, or escape the overwhelming emotions.
“Addiction rarely happens in a vacuum,” said Vanessa Keeton, VP of Marketing at ARC. “We see every day how trauma, especially unresolved trauma, shapes the path toward addiction. Healing must include both.”
The Urgent Link Between PTSD and Substance Use
According to the National Center for PTSD:
-
Approximately 6% of U.S. adults will experience PTSD during their lifetime.
-
Every year, about 13 million Americans live with PTSD.
-
Nearly 40% of adults with PTSD also struggle with substance use.
-
46% of individuals with lifetime PTSD meet the criteria for substance misuse.
-
Among people with both PTSD and alcohol use disorder, over 40% have attempted suicide.
These statistics highlight the critical need for trauma-informed addiction treatment, a model ARC has prioritized across all of its programs.
Recovery That Addresses the Root Cause
At Addiction Recovery Care, we understand that healing from addiction often requires healing from trauma. That’s why our care model is trauma-informed by design, treating the whole person, mind, body, spirit, and relationships.
“Today, we not only raise awareness, we honor the courage it takes to face trauma and choose recovery,” said Keeton. “To every individual walking through our doors with deep emotional wounds, we want you to know: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone.”
From clinical therapy and peer support to faith-based programming, ARC provides a safe space for clients to address their pain, rediscover their worth, and rebuild their lives.
