Fort Gay High School being renovated to serve as housing facility

By Kelli McAlhany,

WAYNE COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Crews are working on a project that will transform the once dilapidated Fort Gay High School into a multi-functional space that will change people’s lives.

The bottom floor will be used for commercial spaces like offices by the town, and the second floor will be used as affordable housing for seniors. The high school is a registered historic building, and crews are working to maintain that status as they make renovations.

Right now, they are in phase two of three. Phase one was restoring the roof, phase two is working on the housing area for seniors and phase three will focus on the downstairs commercial space.

Editor’s note: We borrowed this story from a local TV station as good news after the mayor who was instrumental in securing the project, Joetta Hatfield and clerk Sheila Bowen were indicted on charges of stealing public monies recently.
