Young Women’s Conference Picks National Speaker
The 4th annual Young Women Lead conference at Ashland Community and Technical College will feature Julie Marie Carrier, a top national speaker, award-winning author and Emmy nominee.
Carrier is a positive voice for young women on leadership, character and confidence Her national award-winning book, BeYOUtiful!, is considered a best book for young women on success and self-confidence. Her messages are also featured Chicken Soup for the Soul: Extraordinary Teens, a New York Times best seller.
To date, Carrier has reached nearly a million young people at conferences, events, schools and colleges world-wide.
Young Women Lead (YWL) is a leadership, education and development opportunity for high-school junior girls in Eastern Kentucky. The conference is sponsored primarily by Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. in partnership with ACTC, SOAR and local organizations.
The conference will include breakout sessions with women from local businesses and organizations who are experts on issues that high school girls currently face. Topics will include leadership, financial literacy, careers, social media, fitness and health issues.
The free conference will be held Oct. 11 and 12 at ACTC’s Technology Drive Campus with 500 students expected to attend each day. The conference service area includes Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Lawrence, Lewis and Rowan counties in Kentucky as well as Belfry High School.

Kentucky Veteran’s Expo
ACTC will be participating in the Kentucky Veteran’s Expo Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the El Hasa Shrine Center in Ashland.
Current and former members of the military and their families are invited to come and learn about resources available to them in this area. Resources include state and federal services such as medical screenings, counseling services and benefits enrollment; services from community support programs and non-profit organizations; and training and education opportunities.
There will be also be a career fair and information on employment opportunities. ACTC was named a Military Friendly School last year and will have information on services to help veterans succeed at college.

Retirement 101
Retirement is a difficult decision for everyone, and this class will help answer some of your questions.
Retiring means taking many aspects of life into consideration, and instructor Bev Sharp will discuss some of the topics to take into consideration.
The first things to consider are the facts such as the size of the retiring population and the areas of economy and society that will be impacted most. Then there is the reality of when you can afford to retire. Finally there are considerations of the impact retirement will have on your life, such as taxes, health insurance, life insurance and long term care.

QuickBooks Class
ACTC and the Morehead State University-Ashland Small Business Development Center are cosponsoring this class to help businesses manage their finances.
Participants will learn how to set up a Quickbooks company, adjust the Quickbooks chart of accounts, reconcile balance sheet accounts (accounts receivable), receive payments, make bank deposits, enter bills, pay bills and write checks. Balance sheet items to be covered include bank and credit card statements, loan payments and customer invoices.

Diversity Conference Reminder
There is still time to register for the 3rd Annual Tri-State Conference on Diversity and Inclusion that will be held Friday, Sept. 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at ACTC’s Technology Drive Campus.
Community leaders, educators, college and high school students, counselors and area residents are invited to the conference on the theme “Appalachian Crossroads: Conversations on Diversity.” The keynote speaker is Judge Terri B. Jamison, a Domestics Relations Judge. Concurrent sessions will look at diversity in different issues in the community, educational institutions and the workplace.
Conference cosponsors are ACTC, Morehead State University, Marshall University, Shawnee State University, Ohio University and Ohio University-Southern, Mountwest Community & Technical College, Lindsey Wilson College and Walmart.
