Changes to Kentucky driver’s permit nears finishline

FRANKFORT, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Kentucky law allows teens to start driving with a license at 16, but the law only allows students to get an instructional or “learner’s” permit, which an applicant must also be 16 years old to get.

A bill filed by Rep. Steven Rudy (R-Paducah) this year would simply strike out 16 for 15 as the age Kentucky teens can get an instruction permit , joining 23 other states with a similar law.

On Thursday, House Bill 15 passed the House and is now headed to the Senate for consideration.

“As a state, our age requirement for obtaining a permit is greater than that of our neighboring states,” said Rudy. “HB 15 seeks to align Kentucky’s laws more closely with those of neighboring states and give Kentucky teens the option to get their permits at 15, rather than waiting until 16.”

If the bill makes it to the finish line, teens will get a year’s worth of driving experience before testing for their actual license.

Additionally, the bill would extend the validity of a driver’s instruction permit from three years to four years.

“By allowing Kentucky teens to get their permits earlier, our new drivers can gain more practice and experience behind the wheel,” Rudy added. “HB 15 also allows Kentucky teens to obtain their driver’s licenses sooner, giving them the ability to pursue employment opportunities and gain valuable work experience.”
