With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of William Frederick Martin II, lovingly known as Bill, who peacefully entered eternal rest on the evening of Saturday, August 19, 2023.
Born on April 29, 1943, in Ashland, KY, Bill was a proud son of William and Maxine Martin, and his deep Kentucky roots were a source of immense pride. He delighted in recounting cherished childhood memories of growing up in Louisa and attending school, graduating with the class of 1961.
Bill’s unwavering dedication led him to a distinguished career in the Navy, where he served with honor and pride. After dedicating 24 ½ years to the service, he retired as a Senior Chief Missile Technician. His face would light up as he recounted vivid tales of his time spent on submarines, memories that brought him great joy. Following his military retirement, Bill embarked on a second career with Alltel, ultimately retiring from there in 2001.
Above all, Bill was a loving and devoted family man. For forty years, he shared a beautiful journey with Karen, the love of his life, building a life filled with love, support, and shared dreams. As a proud father to his daughter, Melissa, and a cherished grandfather to Will and Tristan, Bill found immense joy and fulfillment in his role. Every member of his extended family held a special place in his heart, and he treasured the deep bonds of friendship that transformed many of his friends into lifelong family members, including his lifelong friend Jim Cook.
Bill’s dedication to his faith was a cornerstone of his life, and one of his most meaningful relationships was with God. He actively practiced and shared his faith as a devoted member of College Park Baptist Church, where he found fulfillment in serving others.
In 1965, Bill became a member of the Apperson Lodge in Louisa, KY, an association that held great significance to him. He remained an active member for an impressive 58 years and earned the distinction of being a life member. Additionally, Bill was a member of the Scottish Rite. Throughout his memberships, he served in various distinguished positions at both the local and state levels, considering each role and the relationships formed along his journey as both an honor and a privilege.
Bill’s beloved wife, Karen Humphries Martin, stood by his side through the joys and challenges of life. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Michael Sefcik; grandsons, William Carter and Tristan Carter (Kiana); his great-granddaughters, Eliana and Liza; Bill’s brother, Tim Martin (Beth); and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William F. Martin, his mother, Maxine P. Martin, and his daughter, Melissa Sefcik.
Bill’s legacy is one of love, faith, and service. The impact he made through his relationships, his unwavering dedication to his faith, and his community involvement will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
As we bid farewell to Bill, may we find comfort in the memories we shared, the lessons he taught, and the example he set. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us to live lives of faith, integrity, and service.
A visitation will be held on August 24, 2023 at 11AM-12PM at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, located at 7113 Rivers Ave N. Charleston, SC 29406. A celebration of life service will follow at noon in the chapel of Carolina Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow thereafter with Navy Honors at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
