Wayne pushes past Nitro to secure Class AAA Championship

Wayne became Class AAA state champions after beating Nitro 56-39 in the West Virginia Secondary School Athletic Association High School Championships. (WCHS)

No. 2 Wayne became Class AAA state champions after beating No.1 Nitro 56-39 in the West Virginia Secondary School Athletic Association High School Championships.Jayce Sammons led the Pioneers to the title, putting up 22 points in the game. She was helped by Addison Adkins, who led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.Briana Gibson attempted to pull the Wildcats back into the game, netting 16 points, while Natalie Smith made 13 assists, but it was enough to top Wayne.

The Pioneers were able to hold the lead through the fourth period to lift the trophy as Class AAA champions, the first in the school’s history, adding to the successes of the football and baseball teams.
