SULLIVAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF PHARMACY AND HEALTH SCIENCES LAUNCHING COMMUNITY PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
PROGRAM OFFERED COMPLETELY ONLINE
LOUISVILLE, KY – The Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) is launching a Community Pharmacy Certificate program in 2019, opening a pipeline to the hottest career sector of the pharmacy industry.
The Community Pharmacy Certificate program is also the first program offered online by the COPHS, allowing students to complete the program from any location while expanding offerings to those who might have been previously unable to take advantage of the university’s excellent coursework, said Dr. Misty Stutz, assistant dean and chair of Clinical and Administrative Sciences.
“There is a national shortage of pharmacy technicians in all sectors of our industry,” Dr. Stutz said. “Our online Community Pharmacy Certificate is an opportunity for students to participate remotely in Sullivan University’s outstanding pharmacy technician coursework, and an opportunity for Sullivan University to help meet workforce and industry needs by training well-prepared technicians to work in communities across the United States. We are excited about this new program and look forward to launching it in 2019.”
The Community Pharmacy Certificate program is a three-quarter, nine month program preparing prospective pharmacy technicians for practice and career opportunities in the community pharmacy setting. Community pharmacy includes chain retail, grocery store, and independently owned pharmacies and represents the largest sector of employment for both pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.
The courses are career-focused and will prepare students for entry-level practice into the healthcare industry. Courses include core pharmacy technician courses, such as Pharmaceutical Calculations, Pharmacotherapeutics, and Pharmacy Law and Ethics.
All courses will transfer to Sullivan’s diploma or associate degree programs should the student be interested in continuing his/her studies and enhancing their job skills. Students will complete an externship in a community pharmacy setting in their home community. The program is designed to support students in their preparation for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
“Graduates will be well prepared to work as pharmacy technicians upon completion of the program and successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam,” Dr. Stutz said. “They will be prepared to work in any community pharmacy setting, which includes chain retail, grocery store, and independently owned pharmacies, as well as settings such as family health centers and other outpatient pharmacies.”
Requirements for admission include a high school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of the Sullivan University placement exam. In addition, students must have access to technology necessary to participate in online courses.
