REAL ID DEADLINE IS HERE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In 2005 during the administration of President George W. Bush, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to enhance national security. Because of this federal mandate, starting May 7 travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another federally approved form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or military ID, to board domestic flights and access secure federal facilities.
While the Kentucky General Assembly has taken steps to facilitate this transition, including the establishment of regional licensing offices and mobile units, challenges persist, particularly in our rural communities due to the additional security requirements imposed by the federal government.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW that Kentucky offers TWO types of identification, a REAL ID and a regular Kentucky Drivers’ License.
KENTUCKY DRIVER’S LICENSE
You may still drive using a Kentucky Driver’s License, but you will not be able to fly or enter certain government buildings without a REAL ID.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
- If you plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal buildings, you will need a REAL ID or an accepted alternative.
- If you do not fly or visit federal facilities, your standard Kentucky driver’s license remains valid for driving, voting, and other everyday activities.
- May 7 is the enforcement date, not a deadline to obtain a REAL ID. You can still apply for one after this date.
Where to Obtain a REAL ID
Residents of the 31st District can visit the following regional offices:
- Pikeville Regional Office
126 Trivette Drive, Pikeville, KY 41501
- Prestonsburg Regional Office
361 North Lake Drive, Prestonsburg, KY 41653
Additionally, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet operates popup driver licensing events in counties without permanent regional offices. These events provide services such as REAL ID issuance, standard license renewals, and information updates. To find upcoming popup events in your county, visit the Popup Event Map.
What to Bring
When applying for a REAL ID, ensure you have the following documents:
- Proof of Identity: Certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
- Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card or W-2/1099 form
- Proof of Kentucky Residency: Two documents such as utility bills or lease agreements
- Proof of Name Change (if applicable): Marriage license or court order
A vision screening is also required for all Kentucky driver’s license renewals. Please visit www.drive.ky.gov for more information and appointment availability.
