SCHS JAG KENTUCKY WINS 1ST OVERALL AT STATE CAREER DEVELOPMENT COMPETITION!!!
After two incredible days at the JAG KY State Career Development Competition, and a year FILLED with hard work and dedication, the Cardinals from Sheldon Clark High School and their Specialists Mrs. Marcie Ward Hanson and Mr. Thomas Ray, took on the most fierce competition in years with 56 JAG KY schools represented at the annual event.. In our last ever competition as Sheldon Clark High School, JAG KY represented our county well. The conference began in grand style with a trip to the Kentucky State Capitol where JAG KY students posed for a group photo and took part in guided tours. Dinner began with a warm welcome by JAG KY State President Lisa Handziak, followed by a delicious meal at Frankfort’s Capital Plaza Hotel where students took part in fellowship and fun.
After dinner, JAG Kentucky’s statewide Tech Team sat down with Social Media Coordinator Amy Holdeman for their orientation. Sheldon Clark representatives for this exciting new team were sophomores Lakyn Porter and Carson Hanson, and included but not in attendance were Skyla Messer and Jayla Dials. Their job will be to keep track of classroom and JAG KY Career Association activities, take photos and make social media posts and upload information to the JAG KY state website.
The competition began Friday morning with a welcome by Sheldon Clark High School Vice President Hunter Stacy, followed by Frederick Douglass High School’s JAG KY President Daikerra Sweat who introduced JAG National Board Member and Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin who spoke to the entire group, encouraging students to be tenacious in their commitments, just as in his commitment to seeing JAG grow and build. SCHS Career Association VP Hunter Stacy and Mrs. Hanson were selected to sit with Governor Bevin and President Autumn Mills was seated with judges and supporters to promote the JAG way of life!.

Four-year members Katie Blackburn, Lindsy Marcum, Gracie Presley and Mckenzie Mills served as event monitors, working diligently all day and representing Martin County like All Stars! The CDC leadership sessions, coordinated by the Caring Place Student Ministries Pastor Zach Holdeman, were both exciting and engaging.
The winner of this year’s JAG KY ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR went to SCHS Class of 2011’s MaryAnn Fletcher, a former 4 year JKG member, class and state vice president and JAG National Public Speaking Winner! Her words describing what JAG meant to in molding her into the person she is were deeply felt by all. Fletcher, who after graduating from SC went on to achieve a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Pikeville, is a reporter and producer for WYMT Television in Hazard. MaryAnn was introduced by her high school JAG specialist, Mrs. Marcie Hanson.
Students have been preparing for this event ALL year by learning to speak in public, set up an interview over the phone, fill out a job application, work together as a team, provide service to our community, and create a promotional video that encapsulates what JAG students learn all across the state. It has been a year of hard work and dedication and it ALL paid off! Mrs. Hanson wishes to thank all of the hard-working and dedicated JAG KY students who worked together so valiantly in order to make this trip possible, as well as the supportive parents, teachers, specialists, administrators, JAG KY alumni, JAG KY Board of Directors member Gwen Small Pinson and Chairman Larry Caruso, JAG KY President Lisa Handziak, Martin County Schools Superintendent Larry Caruso. When the Cardinals returned home with their hardware, they were met at the county-line for a celebratory trip though Inez Volunteer Fire Department members Nick Endicott, as coordinated by Jarrod Slone and Jordan Wheeler! Thanks to each for their incredible support of student success in Martin County! Congratulations, to the LAST EVER JAG KY class at Sheldon Clark High School! They have established quite a legacy to follow!
