Our Students are Shining: A Season of Unforgettable Success

As I look back on my second year serving as Lawrence County Superintendent, I am constantly reminded that our greatest asset in Lawrence County is our children. Today is all about celebrating the incredible accomplishments of our students. They are currently excelling on local, state, and even international stages, proving that our schools are hubs of talent and hard work.
Winning on the Big Stage
Our academic and technical programs are reaching new heights. HOSA (Future Health Professionals) is a program that prepares our high school nursing and biomed students, along with interested middle schoolers, for careers in medicine. This spring in Louisville, 18 of our students—split evenly with nine from the middle school and nine from the high school—placed at the state level competition. They are now preparing to compete at the International Leadership Conference in Indianapolis this summer!
Similarly, our Future Problem Solvers (FPS) team (made up from students from Louisa East and Louisa Middle) showed incredible critical thinking skills. Their performance at state FPS competition earned them a spot at the International competition in Bloomington, Indiana. In the world of technology, our STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) students represented us well at Rupp Arena among thousands of participants. Fallsburg Middle earned state runner-up for their Tourism Campaign, while Louisa East took runner-up for their “Attendance Matters” poster. We also have a state champion in our midst: LCHS student Ashley Maynard, who won first place in the high school digital poster category.
Leadership and the Arts
Our students are also proving to be voices for change. The LC Youth Health Coalition recently served as the main presenters at the Public Health Showcase at the University of Kentucky, sharing their work on community wellness.
The arts are also thriving. Our community has been treated to several showcases recently, including the LCHS Art Show led by Sarah Brown and the LC Choir Spring Follies directed by Mason Pack. Both Fallsburg and Blaine elementary schools hosted wonderful art shows of their own. Our district bands, under the direction of Scott Smith, performed a beautiful spring concert at Hilltop Methodist, and I encourage everyone to see the upcoming LMS Drama production of Moana Jr. on June 2nd, directed by Tonya Burkette.
Champions in Action
On the athletic front, our middle schoolers have been dominant:
- LMS Softball: Undefeated OVC Champions
- LMS Volleyball (C Team): OVC Champions
- LMS Girls and Boys Soccer: OVC Runners-up
With high school district and regional tournaments in tennis, softball, and baseball beginning in the coming days, the excitement is everywhere.
Why It Matters
With so much going on, I am honestly fearful I have missed an award or a name because our kids are just that active! These experiences outside the normal classroom are where students learn leadership, resilience, and teamwork. They are the moments that turn students into the future leaders of Lawrence County.
