U.S. Homeland security director says 21 state elections were targeted
Today, (JUNE 21, 2017) Dr. Sam Liles, acting director of the Cyber Division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), told the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee that Russian cyberattacks targeted 21 states during the 2016 presidential election.
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes released the following statement:
“We have no evidence of any cyberattack against Kentucky’s election systems. We have no information from the Department of Homeland Security or any other intelligence agency to indicate Kentucky was or is a target of hackers. My office and the State Board of Elections work vigilantly to ensure the security of our elections. We continue to work closely with the DHS, FBI and our Election Integrity Task Force Members to monitor and further enhance our security practices.
“The fact that our elections are decentralized, left to each state to run, and that our voting equipment is not connected to the Internet, should reassure Kentuckians and give them confidence in our elections.”
