Martin County Solar Project is located on the old Martiki mine site in Martin County, Kentucky, comprising more than 1,200 acres of the surface coal mine. The two-phased project will connect onsite into Kentucky Power’s 138 kV Inez Substation and is expected to produce up to 200 megawatts (between the two phases)) of electricity, enough energy to power the equivalent of more than 33,000 Kentucky homes.
“Once constructed, Martin County Solar Project is expected to be one of the first large-scale solar developments on a reclaimed coal mine site in Appalachia,” said Erich Miarka, development director for Savion. “We are thankful for the thoughtful insight and partnership of the local elected officials, economic and development workforce leadership, and educational institutions who are committed to creating long-term benefits for the community through support of development opportunities like this future solar project.”
Martin County Solar Project is owned and developed by Savion, a Shell Group portfolio company specializing in utility-scale solar and energy storage projects – from conception through construction. The local development partner is Kentucky-based Edelen Renewables.
