A Martin County, Kentucky man has been arrested after police say he stole his ex-girlfriend’s car while she was in the hospital after giving birth to their child on New Year’s Day.

According to the Pikeville Police Department, they were called to Pikeville Medical Center on Friday, January 2, where the woman was staying. The woman told officers her ex-boyfriend, Christopher Jordan Mollette, 37, of Tomahawk, KY., had come to watch the birth of their child. Afterwards, she said she told him he could sit in her car to stay out of the cold, since he couldn’t stay with her due to hospital visitation policies. She later discovered the car was gone and feared he took it.

Pikeville Police reviewed security video, which they said showed Christopher Mollette getting out of the passenger side of the car, getting into the driver’s seat, and driving away.

When the woman spoke to Christopher Mollette over the phone and asked him where her car was, she said he told her it was none of her business and hung up on her.

Christopher Mollette was found by law enforcement in Paintsville on Saturday night, January 3, and he was arrested by Paintsville Police Department officer Justin Jackson, and he was charged with the following of:

*THEFT BY UNLAWFUL TAKING OR DISPOSITION AUTO $1,000 < $10,000; and
*RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY $1,000 < $10,000.

Christopher Mollette was transported to & booked into the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville, where he remains incarcerated as of Monday afternoon January 5.
