LOUISA, KY.. –Louisa Rotary held their weekly meeting on Thursday, May 23, 2019.
The Guest Speaker was Karen L. Coburn with the U.S. Department of Commerce for The U.S. Census Bureau. Mrs. Coburn spoke on the importance of having an accurate count of citizens in the county.
She said the census process will begin this August and you will have the option to fill out the paperwork online, through the mail or through a Census Representative at your home. The Census should only take about 10 minutes to complete and is strictly confidential.
“The Census numbers determine how many representatives each state has in Congress and the importance of how the government disburses grants and funding for the state and counties,” Coburn said.”
One point Mrs. Coburn made is that sometimes children get overlooked and aren’t counted due to the fact they may stay with their grandparents or other family members and may not get counted thinking the primary caregiver added them. Also, college students who live on campus sometimes aren’t counted properly thinking they should have been counted in with their parent’s residence. The rule to go by is that if you live more than 6 months at a residence you should be counted for that address, Ms. Coburn concluded.
The United States Census is also currently hiring locally for the 2020 Census. You can apply online at 2020census.gov/jobs
Ms. Coburn recently visited the Lawrence county Fiscal Court and explained the importance of establishing a local committee to aggressively attempt to get everyone counted.
