LOUISA, KY – The City of Louisa proudly announces that local volunteer firefighter Zeb Slone has been awarded the prestigious Wayne Watts Memorial Scholarship, presented annually by the Kentucky Firefighters Association (KFA) Scholarship Committee.

Slone will use the scholarship to pursue a degree in Fire Protection Administration at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). Named in honor of the highly esteemed firefighter and advocate Wayne Watts, the scholarship is awarded to outstanding Kentucky firefighters committed to advancing education, leadership, and service in fire and emergency services.

“Zeb exemplifies the spirit and dedication Wayne Watts stood for,” said Jimmy VanCleve, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. “This competitive scholarship awards scholarships to firefighters and dependents of firefighters across the Commonwealth each year. Zeb ranked high in the scoring of the applicants received. This award recognizes Zeb’s ongoing service to Louisa and his eagerness to grow professionally in the fire service.”

Slone has been a valued volunteer firefighter with the Louisa Fire Department, demonstrating exceptional dedication, bravery, and community involvement. The Wayne Watts Memorial Scholarship will support Slone as he begins his studies this fall at EKU-home to one of the nation’s most respected fire science and safety programs.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the Wayne Watts Memorial Scholarship,” said Slone. “This scholarship not only reflects the legacy of a truly admirable firefighter, but it also enables me to serve Louisa more effectively and pursue my passion in fire science and safety leadership.”

Eastern Kentucky University’s Fire Protection Administration program prepares students for leadership roles in fire suppression, prevention, public education, and emergency management.

“The scholarship Slone received is a testament to his dedication and potential,” said Jacinda Bertie, Enrollment Counselor College of Justice, Safety, & Military Science Eastern Kentucky University. “We are proud to welcome him and support his career pathway.”

Founded in 1919, the Kentucky Firefighters Association is committed to promoting the professional growth and education of firefighters across the Commonwealth. Its scholarship programs honor individuals like Wayne Watts and support future leaders in fire service.
