Dr. Rand Paul Fights New Taxes Imposed by Emergency Orders

Last week, I spoke on the Senate floor to defend a core constitutional principle: only Congress—not the president—has the authority to impose taxes. Tariffs are taxes, plain and simple, and imposing them unilaterally under the guise of an “emergency” is an abuse of executive power.

America was founded on a tax revolt. “Taxation without representation is tyranny” isn’t just history—it’s a warning. Yet today, presidents from both parties’ bypass Congress and impose sweeping tariffs without debate, hurting American families and businesses in the process.

I support President Trump on many issues, but I will not support any president acting like a king. If we don’t reclaim Congress’s power to tax, we open the door to even greater abuses—Republican or Democrat.

I took an oath to the Constitution, and I intend to keep it.
