Kentucky State Police is warning the public about a scam in which criminals pose as funeral home representatives through text messages.
Victims report receiving unsolicited texts claiming to be a funeral home representative — using a real name associated with the facility — and demanding immediate payment for services.
“These messages are fraudulent,” Kentucky State Police said. “Funeral homes do not request or process payments through text messaging. Scammers are using fear and sensitive circumstances to pressure individuals into sending money or disclosing financial information.”
KSP urges residents to share this information with family, friends, and especially older community members who may be vulnerable to such schemes.
Kentucky State Police recommend the following ways to protect yourself:
- Do not respond to unexpected texts requesting payment.
- Contact the funeral home directly using a verified phone number if you receive a suspicious message.
- Never share personal or financial information over text with unknown numbers.
