KENTUCKY STATE POLICE INVESTIGATES DEATH AT EASTERN KENTUCKY CORRECTIONAL COMPLEX IN MORGAN COUNTY

DEAD STATE PRISON INMATE: MARCUS DEAN GRAY (BLUE SHIRT top), 49, OF CORBIN, KENTUCKY; WAS MORTALLY ASSAULTED BY JOHN D. THOMAS (GRAY SHIRT bottom), 32, OF FLORENCE, KY., AT STATE PRISON IN MORGAN COUNTY, KY.
An inmate at an Eastern Kentucky state prison who was was found unconsciousness after being attacked by another state inmate, subsequently passed away at a hospital over the New Year’s Day holiday weekend
 

According to the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 8 in Morehead, KY., they were contacted by the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex (EKCC) on Sunday, January 4 at 6:25 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, to investigate an assault that occurred between two inmates.

KSP Post 8 troopers and detectives responded to EKCC prison after correctional officers located Marcus Dean Gray, 49, Corbin, KY., unresponsive in his cell. Lifesaving measures were provided to Marcus Gray while awaiting arrival of Morgan County EMS. Marcus Gray was transported to Morgan County ARH Hospital then flown to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, KY., where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation reveals that Marcus Gray had been assaulted by John D. Thomas, 32, of Burlington, KY.  Criminal charges have not been filed at the time of this release. The case will be presented to the Morgan County Grand Jury at their next meeting.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Post 8 trooper Wes Montgomery. KSP Post 8 was assisted on scene by the Morgan County Ambulance Service.
