September 1, 1944 — January 30, 2025

James Ernest “Ernie” Fannin, 80 years old of Inez KY, passed away January 30, 2025.

Ernie was born on September 1, 1944, to the late Ernest Fannin and Rose Fannin (Tommy) Forsyth.

He is preceded by his grandson, Matthew Brett Simpkins, and Sherman Preece who is the son of Betty Preece.

Ernie is survived by his daughter, Wendy Lynn Fannin (Tomahawk), long-time loving girlfriend, Betty Preece (Inez), her daughter, Jeanette Preece (Indiana), and her son Seth Preece (Indiana). He is also survived by his son, James Fannin (South Carolina), brother, Gary Lynn (Susan) Fannin (Tomahawk), grandchildren, Tiffany (Simpkins) Cyrus (Ashland), Joshua and Cassie Fannin (South Carolina), his great grandchildren, Krista, Kyle, and Canaan (Ashland) and Brady and Lucas Simpkins (Ashland), and one great great granddaughter, Amelia (Ashland).

Ernie is survived by so many friends and loved ones. He worked at Martiki Coal company, was a Martin County Road foreman, and worked at the Martin County Sheriff’s office where he spent several years as a dedicated volunteer. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church.

Ernie entered the Air Force on July 2, 1963, and was honorably discharged on June 30, 1967.

He loved serving his community as a friend and volunteer. He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, telling stories, and sharing his experiences throughout his life. He loved laughter and life.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 2pm at Crum Funeral Home with Kevin Davis officiating. Friends and family may visit the funeral home Saturday, February 1, 2025 from 5-9pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Crum Funeral Home.
