LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky schools should postpone in-person instruction until the third week of August, Gov. Andy Beshear recommended Monday.
The governor’s recommendation comes amid a recent uptick in new COVID-19 cases in the Bluegrass State, and Beshear also announced Monday that bars should close again and restaurants scale back to 25% capacity.
“I’m making the recommendation, even though I know my kids would be receiving a better education if their mom and I weren’t trying to teach them the math,” Beshear said Monday during his COVID-19 briefing. “And I’m making that recommendation because I care about my kids. I care about yours. I care about their teachers and administrators, and I believe everybody deserves a safe environment.
“And it’s hard to argue we have a safe environment when our cases overall are escalating and our positivity rate is up again today.”
Also Monday, Beshear announced 522 new COVID-19 in Kentucky and nine additional virus-related deaths. The state now has seen 27,601 total cases of the coronavirus and 709 total deaths.
Beshear said Monday’s new cases included 21 kids under 5 years old, including one child just 11 days old.

Lawrence, Martin and Johnson Counties have already set their starting dates on or around August 26, which would still meet the governor’s new advisory.
College students in the area are scheduled to head back to classes the first week of August so it is unclear if in-person classes will be offered after the surge in cases of Covid-19 virus. –Editor
Nothing safe about it!
I would feel better about my child staying home until all this madness ends. I care about my childs education, but I also care more about her well being and life. It’s too dangerous getting all these kids gathered together with their teachers. Why in the world would they have school right in the middle of a pandemic that’s so bad people die daily, at all ages. It’s the worst decision they’ve ever made sending kids out there in this to go to school just because of the money signs. Should be ashamed of themselves. Makes me sick.
