For the 2016 league, we had the first cancellation of the year on Tuesday, May 17. The course was so wet, with all the rain we received during the past week, the course was just not playable. Our attractive and very competent golf pro, Missy, decided it would be better if the league did not play, for both the course and the players. The players voted that the league not be extended due to the cancelled round with the schedule continuing on the present dates.
Jeff, our course superintendent, J. Lynn See and I had a long conversation about the course. This has been a fascinating spring making it tough for Jeff. It appears that April was May, and May until this Tuesday was April. I give Jeff and his crew lots of credit. Also, Jeff has done a great job with the greens. Unfortunately, I found I misspoke. The greens have not been rolled, but the speed is up, and the roll is smoother. If we have more warm sunny days, the Bermuda fairways will choke out all the other grasses and the course will reach its championship standard.
Finally, the Eagle Ridge Golf League play on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, found the weather sunny, dry and the course more playable. As I said, the greens are becoming smoother and faster as illustrated by the members with the fewest putts. Tuesday was a beautiful day for golf, short sleeves, golf shorts. When I saw Sam Sumpter arrive in his wide brim sun hat, then I realized that the same applied to me. Sam is my SPF guru. Next week I will wear my sun hat.
Tuesday was a good day for golf with the ability to drive the carts in the fairways – good enjoyable play.
