Part 3

Candidates Speak: Magistrates

This is the third in a 3-part series allowing all candidates space and time to answer our simple questionairre free of charge. All the candidates for judge/executive and both candidates for Sheriff. Some of the candidates chose not to reply to our invite–or don’t know how to use email or possibly didn’t get the message.

District 1 Magistrate candidates

Beginning with District 1 which is:

BUCHANAN, FALLSBURG, BRAMMER GAP and DEEPHOLE.

In order on the ballot:

Josh Trout

Candidate for GOP DISTRICT 1

  1. Name, age, occupation, family and background, education

My name is Josh Trout, and I’m 35 years old. I’m running for Lawrence County Magistrate in District One to represent the people and communities of Fallsburg, Deephole, Buchanan, and Brammer Gap.

I’m a 2009 graduate of Lawrence County High School. I am married to my wife Courtney, we have one son, Ryman, who attends Fallsburg Elementary School.

I currently work in a management role across several businesses, primarily in the coal industry. Before that, I spent 13 years with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at the Lawrence County State Highway Department, where I worked in highway maintenance and administrative services.

  1. Qualifications for office

I believe my work experience and background have prepared me to serve the people of District One well. I spent 13 years working for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at the Lawrence County State Highway Department in both highway maintenance and administrative services. During that time, I learned the importance of responsibility, communication, problem solving, and taking care of the roads and infrastructure our communities depend on every day.

My current role in business management has given me experience with budgeting, workforce needs, and understanding the importance of keeping good jobs in Lawrence County. It has also taught me how to work with people, handle responsibility, and make practical decisions in day-to-day operations.

3. Reason for running.

I’m running for Lawrence County Magistrate because I care about the people and communities of District 1. This is home to me. It’s where I live, where I work, and where my wife and I are raising our son.

I know the importance of good roads, honest communication, and having someone in office who is willing to listen and be available to the people they represent. I’m running because I want to do my part to help our communities and give back to the place that will always be home to me.

I believe in hard work and treating people fairly. I want to be a fresh voice for the people of District One and help move Lawrence County forward in a positive direction.

In the eight years I’ve been in office there has been lots of progress in a lot of areas and there is always room for improvement.  I enjoy helping people and want the very best for everyone. And will continue to do the very best for the citizens of this community.

David Pinson

Magistrate incumbent District 3

BRUSHY, BLAINE, MARTHA, MEADS BRANCH and
RICHARDSON

My name is David Pinson and I currently serve as Magistrate for District 3.
I am 64 years old and a lifelong resident of Lawrence County having lived most of my life in the community of Richardson. I married Connie Boyd Pinson in 1984 and we have two sons Tyler and Stephen of whom we are very proud. I also have two wonderful Grandsons named Riley and Oliver who light up our lives !
I graduated from Lawrence County High School in 1979 as the second class from the then “new school” and went on to attend Ashland Community College, Ashland State Vocational Technical School and The University of Kentucky.
I worked a short time for Kendall Electric, Ashland Oil Inc and then for AEP – Kentucky Power for 33 years. I have also operated my own business as a licensed Electrical Contractor and a Kentucky Electrical Inspector .
With Kentucky Power I wore many hats . I spent many years at the Big Sandy Power Plant working in the Operations Department becoming Unit Operator where I was responsible for controlling the plant and directing the crews. I also worked as an Instrument and Control Tech at Big Sandy. I performed Predictive Maintenance and became Clearance Command Coordinator .
All of my positions carried a lot of responsibility for the safety of personnel and equipment. Through all of this I gained experience working with various departments and groups. I learned the value of collaboration. I know when and how to lead and realize that a large part of that is listening. My experience at the plant as well as my electrical functions have always been about coordination and cooperation. I have spent years in roles where this was mandatory for success. This approach has proved essential to managing projects and for getting everyone on the same page and ensuring things progress as planned and that as conditions change you adjust your plan . You assess the situation and make decisions to keep things on track.
When I retired from AEP , I realized that for the first time in many years I had some free time . I wanted to try to help my community. As I had traveled all around Lawrence County people would tell me their issues and concerns and I wanted to help so I entered public service.
I have applied my training to my position now. I am responsive and responsible. When I learn of issues I make sure they are delivered to the people who can address it . I take input from everyone so we work as a team and I always make decisions from the viewpoint of what I think is best for the County and what my constituents want.
I enjoy helping people and trying to improve conditions. I offer mature , steady and responsible leadership and will always put the people first !
I humbly ask the voters for their support and to allow me to continue to represent them and be their voice on The Fiscal Court!
Thank You
David Pinson

There are two candidates registered for Coroner but Jimmy Castle has withdrawn from the race so a vote for him will not count. Sam M. Muncy is the Republican nominee and he will face democratic opposition in Merideth Moore in November.
County Clerk Chris Jobe said to remind those who want early voting it begins Thursday (June 14) and runs through Saturday and starts each morning at 10:00 am and stays open until 6:00pm. He said the polls can only stay open for eight hours a day, so he set it later to acomodate voters who get off work later.
