Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, delays and signal controlled traffic beginning Aug. 31

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AUGUST, 2025) –The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 12 advises motorists of an upcoming bridge deck restoration project on KY 3 at the Louisa/Fort Gay Bridge in Lawrence County beginning Monday, Aug. 31.

The project will take place between mile points 14.0 and 15.0.  This includes the bridge and the KY 3 Point Section area. Due to the high volume of traffic and the multiple directions of travel that happen in this area, motorists are urged to pay close attention to signs, signals and changing traffic patterns throughout the project.

Work will be completed in three phases, with lane closures shifting as the project progresses:

  • Phase 1: Work will begin in the southbound lane traveling toward Fort Gay, West Virginia, including the area near the turnoff to the Point Section toward Martin County.
  • Phase 2: Work will shift to the northbound lane coming out of the Point Section and turning right toward Fort Gay.
  • Phase 3: Work will move to the northbound lane traveling from Fort Gay toward Louisa.

Advance warning signs, cones, and temporary electronic traffic signals will be used to control traffic through the work zone. Motorists should be prepared to stop and allow additional travel time.

Drivers should expect some delays, particularly during the early stages of the project as signal timing is adjusted to accommodate traffic movements in the area. Additional delays may occur during concrete pours and other portions of the bridge restoration work.

Traffic changes will also affect local streets in Louisa. Water Street and Vinson Avenue traffic will not be permitted to access KY 3/East Madison Street.  Traffic will need to use South Main Cross Street. Motorists who normally travel through this area should plan accordingly.

Crews are scheduled to work approximately 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Night and weekend work is also possible depending on the contractor’s schedule, weather and construction activities.

Emergency vehicles and official school vehicles will be accommodated throughout the project. The project is currently scheduled for completion in early November, however, the completion date is subject to change based on weather, construction progress and other unforeseen circumstances.

KYTC District 12 asks motorists to use caution, reduce speeds, avoid distractions and remain patient while traveling through the area. Drivers should never attempt to bypass traffic control devices or enter a closed lane.
