Lawrence County Board of Education Sets Graduation Date; Students and Teachers Recognized for Achievements
LOUISA – In the March meeting of the Lawrence County Board of Education, the Board established Lawrence County High School’s graduation ceremony date at May 20, 2016 and they also recognized recent student and teacher achievement.
“As it stands right now, the last day for students is May 19th,” said Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher. “If something happens, obviously, we would have to put the last date for students later in May and in that event the ceremony for graduation would go on as scheduled on May 20th, but there would be no diplomas issued until the final day for students.”
During the student and staff recognition section of the meeting, Dr. Fletcher recognized the achievements of students and staff.
He pointed out that sophomore Carrie Jo Cecil had finished 6th in the state in Language Arts at the Governor’s Cup Academic Competition. Also, Victoria Penix was recognized for back to back Region 8 wins in the Jim Claypool Conservation Art/Poster Contest – the first Lawrence County student to accomplish this feat.
Students from Louisa West Elementary School presented the Board with thank you cards and pictures in an expression gratitude for the construction of the new playground at the school.
Then the Dr. Fletcher recognized the teachers with the greatest gains on Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) testing done most recently. Teachers recognized were:Sara Bowens, Jennifer Burns, Carrie Maynard, Anna Prince, Laura Compton, Bethany Muncy, Amie Chicko, Sarah Perotti, Maria Kirk, Karen Sturgill, Cody Spears, Lee Ann Cyrus, Sarah McClanahan, April Sammons, Lee Jewell, Jessica Nelson, Kara Williams, Joe Halfhill, Patricia Tate, Larisa Gauze, Donna West, Stephanie Cordle, Aerial Murray, Nikki Nelson, Meaghan Horney, Steven Blevins.
Dr. Fletcher updated attendees on the budget situation in the Commonwealth, telling them that the House had passed a budget that had no cuts to the educational services, but the Senate still had yet to pass that budget as written. He also let those in attendance know about Commissioner Stephen Pruitt’s recognition of Lawrence County in the Superintendent’s Spotlight article.
Dr. Fletcher recognized the recent successes of the academic teams and basketball team (Carrie Jo Cecil placed 6th in the State in Language Arts; Louisa, Fallsburg and Blaine’s Middle School academic teams swept first through third places in the District Governor’s Cup; Louisa East won second place in the District Governor’s Cup, beating out schools from Johnson County and LCHS won their third straight District Championship in academics and the LCHS boys’ basketball team went to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history).
Fletcher shared an update about the track/football field drainage construction project and talked also about the AEP grant focus work in securing dual credit opportunities for LCHS students.
The Board approved consent agenda items as listed and Dr. Fletcher noted and commended Fallsburg’s 8th grade students and staff for doing their 8th grade trip during Spring Break in order to minimize confict with instructional time. SEE AFENDA ITEMS ELSEWHERE ON THE LAZER HERE
Finally, the Board approved canceling the scheduled April 18th meeting and scheduling a meeting April 19th (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. at Blaine.
