ACTC Conference Explores New Technologies
The Emerging Technologies Conference March 11 at Ashland Community and Technical College will explore some of the new technologies that will change our lives. Supported by a USDA Rural Development Grant, the free conference is open to the community.
The keynote address on the Rise of the Super Smart Machines brings science fiction to the near future. Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert Roman Yampolskiy discusses the emergence of smart machines and their impact on human pursuits, the workplace and the economy.

Conference sessions exploring virtual reality, drone, 3-D printing and database architecture are outlined below.
“The Future of Manufacturing: Using CNC Equipment, 3d Printing, and More” looks at the impact of the digital age on industrial processes. Presenter John Riley has worked on product development and future product research for 15 years at Samtec in New Albany, IN.
“The Leap Motion Controller” is a computer accessory that works alongside the keyboard and mouse to create a virtual or augmented reality experience. Presenter Jason Hick is the Lead Technical Analyst at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
“Drones in Business and Industry” looks at the rapid evolution of drones from entertainment-based craft to viable, valuable and affordable tools for business and industry problems. Presenter Troy Gillespie is an early adopter of drone technology.
“Designers of the Future – The Data Architect” visits the future of data analysis, which is the life blood of any organization. How it’s gathered and collected makes all the difference. Dr. Jim Reneau, the presenter, is an Associate Professor at Shawnee State University who has been programming and developing software for over 30 years.
A penal discussion on “What It Takes to Become World Class” features four regional experts. Rick Johnson is Associate Vice President at the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation. William Louis Roach-Barrette is a student involved in software and engineering projects through MSU and the Kentucky Innovation Launchpad. Ronnie Delph is an electrical engineer with more than thirty years’ experience in utility plant instrumentation and control systems. Dr. Benjamin K. Malphrus, MSU Professor and the Space Science Center Director, has served on the scientific staff of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and has been Principal Investigator on several nanosatellite missions.
Electrical License Exam Prep
Get ready for the Kentucky Electrical Journeyman License Exam with a class at ACTC. The course is designed for people who have the hours and experience necessary to take the test but who need a refresher course before taking the exam.
The class is a mixture of lecture and hands-on exercises, and students can take a practice exam. Instructor Lennis Adkins is a KY Licensed Master Electrician with more than 40 years of electrical experience.
The class meets six Saturdays, March 5 to April 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Roberts Drive Campus. The $279 fee includes a workbook, but participants should bring their latest edition of the International Building Code. To register, email as_workforce@kctcs.edu or call 606.326.2130.
