LOUISA, Ky. — Longtime Louisa Police Chief Greg Fugitt announced his retirement plans today and Mayor Harold Slone has a replacement ready.

Slone issued a statement this morning concerning the situation.

“…We certainly wanna congratulate chief Fugitt in his retirement and thank him for his dedicated service. Sargent Steve Wilburn will be the interim chief until April 8th city council meeting when he’s expected to be confirmed with council approval.

Wilburn is also a veteran Louisa Police Officer.

Steven Wilburn Appointed as Interim Chief of Louisa Police Department

Louisa, KY – The Louisa Police Department is proud to announce that Sgt. Steven Wilburn has been appointed as Interim Chief of Police, effective April 1, 2025. Chief Wilburn brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the position, having dedicated his career to serving and protecting the citizens of Louisa.

Chief Wilburn’s commitment to professional development has been exemplary. In 2022, he completed the FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute, a prestigious and intensive 4 1/2-day program designed for first-line supervisors and middle managers.

This training enhanced his leadership competencies in areas such as performance management, risk assessment, mentorship, and credibility. The program is taught by senior law enforcement leaders and focuses on real-world applications to ensure effective leadership within police agencies.

Additionally, Interim Chief Wilburn is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision (APS) Class 89, a rigorous three-week, 122-hour training program hosted by the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT). APS is designed for officers on the path to leadership roles, covering essential topics such as ethical decision-making, constitutional law, emotional intelligence, and public speaking.

Steven Wilburn’s promotion reflects his dedication, extensive training, and leadership within the department. The Louisa Police Department and the community congratulate Chief Wilburn on his well-earned appointment and look forward to his leadership.

Mayor Harold Slone stated that Wilburn will be appointed as full chief during the April 8th council meeting.

Chief Fugitt stated, “I am overly excited about Steven getting this position. It was what I was hoping for, knowing he has worked hard for this day.”
