Alverta “Faye” Thompson, widow of Edmond “Bus” Thompson died on Sunday, February 4th, 2024 surrounded by family at Rockingham County Hospice House.

She was formerly of Fort Gay, West Virginia. She was born September 28th, 1926 in Roanoke, Virginia. She was a graduate of Fort Gay High School in 1946. She was a school teacher from 1954 to 1964. She then accepted employment with Health and Human Services. She went to further her education and graduated from Marshall University in 1977 with a degree in Regents Bachelor of Arts. She retired from the Wayne County Department of Health and Human Resources, where she was a supervisor of Family and Children’s services with 22 years of service. She was a member of Fort Gay Methodist Church since 1939 and served in various offices including secretary, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and lay speaker. She was also a member of Vinson Memorial Christian Church in Huntington, WV.

Faye lived a life of service, participating with numerous civic organizations. She served on the CEOs, formerly Homemakers, as the president. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Wayne County Community Services. She also served on the following committees: Fort Gay Alumni Scholarship Committee, Metro AAA Senior Services advisory committee, Stepping Stones Grievance Committee, and member of the Westmoreland Community Center. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Wayne Chapter 156. She was the Queen Mother of the Fiesty Red Hats of Westmoreland chapter of the Red hat Society.

She was preceded in death by her son, Edmond Thompson Jr.

She is survived by sons, John “Butch” and wife Opal “Toots” Thompson of Wooster, Ohio and David Wesley Thompson of Fort Gay, West Virginia and bonus son, Dr. Paul Jackson of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Five grandchildren, Dr. Kimberley Thompson-Hairston (Rick Hairston), Laura Faye Thompson, Kara Edinger, Wesley Thompson, and Sarah Thompson. She also has six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Special niece, Mary Francis Moon and nephew, Greg Thompson. Special friends Tom and Andy Martin and Del Wolfe.

Friends may visit the family on Thursday, February 8th, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Young Funeral Home Chapel. Eastern Star Service will begin at 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 at 12:00 PM at the Young Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Fort Gay Cemetery. Following the burial, Fort Gay Methodist Church will be hosting a dinner for her family and friends.

Young Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Mrs. Thompson and her family.
