LOVELY, Ky. (WYMT) – The Martin County Coroner believes a man’s death was heat related.

Coroner Chris Todd says the body of Fleming Hurley, 92, was found in a home on Riverfront Road in Lovely just after 5:00 p.m. Monday.

The coroner believes he likely died several days ago, during the recent stretch of very hot days.

A dog was also found dead and another in bad shape.

The coroner also says there was a new air conditioner on the porch that had not been installed.

A brutal, record-breaking heat wave over the Fourth of July weekend caused at least 44 fatalities across multiple states, including tragic losses in places like New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City. [1, 2]
Key Factors and Vulnerabilities
    • Climate Driven: Human-caused climate change has driven a roughly 50% surge in US heat-related deaths over the last two decades. [1, 2]
    • At-Risk Populations: Older adults (particularly those over 65), people with pre-existing chronic conditions, and outdoor workers face the highest risk. [1, 2]
    • Disparities: Studies show heat wave mortality disproportionately impacts low-income communities and historically marginalized neighborhoods due to the urban heat island effect and reduced access to medical care. [1]

Prevention and Warning Signs
    • Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke: Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency where the body loses its ability to regulate temperature, often marked by a high body temperature, confusion, and loss of consciousness. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
    • Protective Environments: Access to air conditioning and green spaces drastically reduces mortality risk. You can check if your local community has active cooling centers or heat advisory alerts via the National Weather Service. [1]
