Warming stations open across eastern Kentucky

LOUISA, Ky. (WCHS) — A slight drop in temperature can make a big difference in eastern Kentucky’s mountains.
With dangerously cold conditions settling in, several counties have opened warming stations.
The cots are being set up at the Lawrence County Community Center just in case. All of the county’s warming stations are on standby as this current case of cold temperatures drags on.
“The sun doesn’t shine in a lot of these hollows in Lawrence County,” emergency management director Travis Hughes said. “I can take you to several places where the sun don’t shine. Even with snow and ice on the road, a lot of these places won’t melt for several weeks.”
Hughes said that’s the reason why some spots in the county are colder than others.
“In needs of being an emergency we can help folks with wood if they burn wood and need additional heat for their house,” he said. “We try to meet the needs with wood and kerosene, but again, not a free handout, it’s for emergency use only.”
This winter, Hughes encourages people to check on their neighbors and elderly on a regular basis to make sure they are OK.
