College football is never static, and the 2026 season is already shaping up around new stars, key transfers, and shifting conference landscapes. The picture is still forming, but that uncertainty adds to the intrigue in 2026.

Elite Contenders: Ohio State, Texas, and Notre Dame

If there’s a common thread running through preseason conversations, it begins with Ohio State, Texas, and Notre Dame. Early NCAAF betting lines, preseason rankings, and national projections consistently place all three near the top.

Ohio State keeps finding ways to remain in that conversation. Players leave for the NFL every year, yet the Buckeyes rarely seem caught rebuilding. Another highly rated recruiting class arrives, experienced contributors step into larger roles, and the standard barely shifts.

Texas enters the fall with attention inevitably following Arch Manning. Every throw, every decision, every result becomes part of a larger discussion. Texas also has a deep roster with genuine balance, including speed on offense and difference-makers on defense.

Notre Dame continues to rely on an identity that has remained recognizable for decades. Physical defense still defines the program. National projections place the Fighting Irish among the leading playoff candidates.

Rising Powers: Oregon, Georgia, and Indiana

Some teams aren’t trying to prove they belong anymore. Oregon fits comfortably into that category.

The Ducks are no longer rebuilding and have become regular participants in the national championship conversation. In 2026, they’ve paired explosive football with a defense that keeps taking meaningful steps forward.

Georgia, meanwhile, almost feels immune to roster turnover. Every offseason brings departures, and every offseason another elite defense appears, another physical offensive line develops, and the questions fade for a while. Kirby Smart has built something remarkably durable. However, the Bulldogs must address key issues this season.

Indiana’s story feels different. Curt Cignetti has quickly shifted expectations, and the Hoosiers enter the season with real confidence backed by results.

Each team has something different to offer. Oregon plays fast and stretches defenses, Georgia relies on discipline and physicality, and Indiana has built through consistency and player development. However, whether all three sustain that momentum remains to be seen.

Premier Talents: Smith, Moore, and Manning

Individual players always shape the national conversation, even in a sport built around depth. Three names stand above most others entering 2026.

  • Jeremiah Smith: has already established himself as one of college football’s defining receivers. Defenses change coverages for him, and coordinators rebuild game plans around him,
  • Leonard Moore: The Notre Dame cornerback has built a noteworthy reputation on defense with a combination of instincts, technique, and patience. Quarterbacks rarely test him repeatedly, and he’s already viewed as a top 2027 NFL Draft prospect,
  • Arch Manning: draws headlines before the first snap, but the talent is real. He brings arm strength, mobility, and growing command to Texas’ offense.

Talent to Monitor: Toney, Simmons, and Hoover

Not every star enters the season with years of national recognition. Some are still climbing, and that climb is worth watching.

  • Malachi Toney of Miami arrives after a freshman season that matched the hype. He broke records, won ACC Rookie of the Year, and showed the speed and confidence that made him one of college football’s most dynamic young receivers,
  • Colin Simmons of Texas changes games without always showing up in the box score. His pressure forces hurried throws, alters protections, and consistently disrupts opposing offenses,
  • Josh Hoover of Indiana is one of the most intriguing additions to the roster. His experience gives him a solid base, and Curt Cignetti’s quarterback-friendly system could help him produce at a higher level.

How these players perform won’t just shape individual award races. NCAAF articles point out that their growth could alter conference standings, playoff discussions, and the broader perception of their programs.

Defining Storylines: Transfers and Conference Shakeups

Few offseason moves generated more discussion than Darian Mensah’s transfer from Duke to Miami. After leading Duke to the 2025 ACC Championship and earning MVP honors in that game, he now finds himself wearing different colors.

Duke, meanwhile, begins the challenge of moving forward without Mensah, who was pivotal in the ACC Championship Game win over Virginia, where he helped lead the Blue Devils to their first outright ACC title since 1962.

The conference landscape has also changed. The reshaped Pac-12 adds five former Mountain West members, one Sun Belt program, and Gonzaga, while Oregon State and Washington State remain the conference’s only original schools.

A Season Worth Following

Every season begins with predictions. Most don’t survive the autumn. Contenders must prove themselves, rising teams face their next test, and even the biggest stars hit moments that weren’t in the script.

With major transfers and another reshaped conference in the mix, 2026 looks wide open in ways rankings can’t capture. The games will have the final word.
