Wayne County Schools Involved in Social Media Danger!

Sept. 11, 2024 — Late last night this was posted by Chris Williams:  Wayne County Board of Education Issued this statement:

“Wayne County Schools Parents & Guardians:

There have been a rash of social media threats across the nation this week. These Threats are intended to create hysteria and disrupt school operations. Multiple counties in West Virginia have had to deal with non-credible threats this week, including some surrounding counties.

The latest non-credible threat originates from a Western State and lists dozens of schools in West Virginia in an attempt to create as much disruption as possible. The list includes Wayne High School and Spring Valley High School in reference to Friday.

Law Enforcement are aware of these social media posts and the West Virginia Office of Homeland Security School Safety Division closely monitors this activity and notifies school districts and local law enforcement. Law enforcement has deemed this threat as non-credible.

Please speak with your student about notifying you or adults at the school immediately if they see a threat online involving their school. Wayne County Schools will continue to work with law enforcement partners to monitor these threats this week including some surrounding counties.”

This brief statement isn’t answering parents’ questions of when does it become creditable if talking about isn’t enough what’s next? There are many parents keeping their kids at home safe Thursday and Friday.

One parent made the comment “Why not close school and go virtual Thursday and Friday to figure out what is going on?”

Going virtual would help law enforcement have ample time to find out how credible the threat is and hopefully where it’s coming from, and our children can safely go back to school. Another parent chooses to keep her kids at home, ‘where they are safe, and a police presence needs to be available for every school in the county.”  Parents also think children should not be held accountable for missing days in this situation.

Education is vital and students, staff and parents should all be safe to attend school and take classes without the fear of a threat to harm them. There is nothing more important than the safety of our children. Some parents think the idea of armed teachers is what it comes down to needing.

We will stay on top of any new information the WCBOE releases.
