PRICHARD, W.VA. — There has been an update on the status of the Wayne County Commissioner Seat. There was no decision made on Wednesday’s hearing but proposed orders are to be provided by both candidates, the court decided yesterday .
It comes down to one question: What was County Commissioner Enoch “Jay” Marcum’s address when he filed to run for office? If it was NOT in district one or two, then officials say he would not be eligible.
Marcum won the seat by 15% over former Wayne Commissioner President Jeff Maddox in the general election. Maddox was the one who brought this to situation to light, saying “I just want the right thing to be done”. Maddox says he is not interested in the seat.
Maddox and his attorney say otherwise. His attorney cited tax records and utility bills as evidence that Marcum’s “permanent” address is in Prichard, which falls outside district requirements.
Marcum made this comment, “The Wayne County Clerk told me flat out, to my face, he said, ‘You’ve got your lease, your utility bills, you’ve got checks stubs,’” said Marcum. “They’ve even got federal documents that I filed with the IRS with my Kenova address.”
As for what comes next, both sides will submit what’s called “proposed orders,” and the other two county commissioners, Robert Thompson and Travis Thompson, will make their decision in the coming weeks.
