A woman from Warren County, Kentucky who was being searched for by law enforcement, as she was a wanted fugitive on several warrants in connection to indictments on trafficking meth and not appearing in court in her home county, found herself in deeper criminal troubles after she was caught in Johnson County
On Monday, August 26, Johnson County Sheriff Scott Hazlette, two JCSO deputies and Kentucky State Police troopers arrested a Bowling Green KY. woman on meth trafficking charges after learning she was staying at a Keaton area residence and conducting a traffic stop, according to the press release by Sheriff Hazlette.
Sheriff Hazlette said he had received information that the woman, Cynthia Diane Brown, 39, of Cemetery Road, Bowling Green, Kentucky; had been seen in her vehicle in Keaton and spotted the car traveling on Little Mud Lick Road on Monday August 26, and ran the tag and found that she had approximately five Warren County warrants related to drug charges.
Sheriff Hazlette said he left the residence he was at on Little Mud Lick Road after seeing the vehicle but couldn’t find it, and drove to Keaton, but was unable to find the vehicle. He then made his way back to Paintsville and advised Johnson County Sheriff Office Deputy David Adams and KSP Post 9 Pikeville Trooper Tracy Salyer to be on the lookout for Cynthia Brown’s vehicle on KY. 201.
As he was traveling back, Sheriff Hazlette wrote that he was informed they had located the vehicle and Cynthia Brown at Kountry Korner Market on KY. 201, and she and Christopher D. Davis, 33, of Rose Road, Keaton, were being detained.
After making the arrest for the outstanding warrants on Cynthia Brown, the officers asked for permission to search the vehicle, which Brown declined, leading to Johnson County Sheriff Office Deputy Jeff Castle bringing out his K-9 unit, Boss, who alerted on the passenger side of the vehicle, Sheriff Hazlette stated.
When trying to gain access to the vehicle, Sheriff Hazlette wrote that he and the other police officers discovered that Christopher Davis had taken the key fob into the restroom of the Kountry Korner, and broken the key off and made the fob inoperable, requiring alternative entry into the vehicle.
“We asked if we could look in the car and she said, ‘Well, I’d just as soon you don’t,’” Sheriff Hazlette wrote in his report
Christopher Davis had told the officers that the key fob must have been locked in the car, Sheriff Hazlette stated, but the fob was discovered above the sink in the restroom.
“They found the fob up there and the key had been broken off, so I assume he must have flushed it down the toilet, because we never found it,” said Sheriff Hazlette.
When searching the car, officers discovered a black box under the passenger seat which contained almost three ounces of suspected methamphetamine, alongside marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Sheriff Hazlette said that Cynthia Brown herself claimed all of the illegal items, explicitly stating that they did not belong to Christopher Davis.
Brown was arrested and lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center on charges of first-degree bail jumping, first-degree and first-offense trafficking in a controlled substance (greater than or equal to two grams of methamphetamine), third-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and four counts of failure to appear. Christopher Davis was arrested on one charge of obstructing governmental operations; whereupon afterwards he has since been released from the BSRDC jail after posting his bond.
As of Friday afternoon, August 30, Cynthia Brown was still being held on a $10,025 full cash bond only.
According to Sheriff Scott Hazlette, Cynthia Brown’s outstanding warrants were related to indictments in Warren County for four consecutive years and absconding from a court-ordered rehab program between 2019 and 2022.
Sheriff Hazlette said he believes maintaining a presence in the most remote areas of the county, such as the Keaton community, is paramount to protecting the populace because as he’s told his deputies, the criminal element isn’t going to drive into town with a neon sign on their vehicle.
“That’s what I’ve said, is that we’ve got to maintain a presence in the most remote parts of the county, because, like I’ve told my deputies, the criminal element isn’t going to drive down U.S. 23 or U.S. 460 with a neon sign on their vehicle that says, ‘I’m a dope dealer,’ and we have to send the message that we’re watching everywhere,” Sheriff Hazlette said in a local interview; adding that community tips continue to be a vital part of combating the drug problem. “Community involvement and information is a vital part of it. We’re not going to see everything the same way that someone who lives in an area does; they know what’s out of place or suspicious much better than we do.”
