FT. GAY AND CRUM COMBINED SQUAD BEATS MARTIN COUNTY TO GO 3-0
INEZ, Ky. — Fort Gay and Crum didn’t have enough for football teams in 2016 so they got a waiver to combine and make one team. The transition has been a smooth one so far. The team became Tolsia Middle and traveled to Sheldon Clark to play Martin Co. Middle and came away with a 22-18 victory last week.
The Rebels improved to 3-0 on the season after picking up wins over Harts and Barboursville. The Cardinals dropped to 2-2 with wins over Paintsville and Magoffin Co.
The Cards got on the board first when Devon Cassidy scored on the first play of the ballgame on a run of 65 yards. Cassidy scored all three touchdowns all on runs of at least 50 yards.
Tolsia answered right back when Devon Stull scored from 7 yards out and also added the 2 point conversion run. With MC leading 12-8 late in the first half Tolsia QB Austin Bailey connected with Tyler Johnson on a 9 yard TD and Tanner Copley added the 2 point conversion run and the Rebels led 16-12 at Half.
In the second half Tolsia took advantage of two turnovers as Austin Bailey scored to give the Rebels the 22-18 victory. Bailey also had an INT on defense.
Tolsia Middle Head Coach Nick Crum
COACH’S COMMENT
“… Our kids played so hard and deserved the victory. Once we adjusted to the jet sweep. I thought defensively we played pretty well. Our offense also helped out with ball control. It was a good team win. I was proud of the kids for the fight they showed.”
Martin Co. Middle Head Coach Cody Slone
COACH’S COMMENT
“… We’re still just making too many mistakes offensively. Fumbles and situational football was the difference in the game 3rd and 4th down conversions and we missed all three of our two point conversions. Those are key in a close game and we just couldn’t overcome some mistakes that gave them momentum late. We’re still looking to have a good season, we have to learn from our mistakes and improve. We have a good team we are just very inexperienced with several starters being first year players. I still like our team and where we stand. We just have to put this one behind us and move on to Adams Thursday.”
Tolsia will play at Home on Thursday vs Guyan Valley.
Martin Co. will travel to Adams on Thursday.
