Fort Gay, W.Va. — In the latest installment of the Tolsia and Wayne football game it was the Pioneers grinding out a 21-7 victory on Friday at Wilts Salmons Field.

#2 Fred Ekers with the nice kickoff return out to midfield.

After a scoreless first quarter the Pioneers dented the scoreboard first on a Fisher Fry to Ronnie Staley touchdown pass and Kade Estep added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 7:29 left in the first half.

#5 Robert Evans out races the Wayne defender for a first down.

Sophomore Robert Evans found the end zone on 4th down from 7 yards out and Freshman Braxton Jones tacked on the PAT to tie the score at 7 apiece with 7:17 left in the 3rd quarter.

Wayne broke the tie when Kaiden Hayton scored from 6 yards out but Senior Luke Williamson blocked the extra point and it was 13-7 with 3:10 left in the 3rd quarter.

#88 Bray Mollette with the nice run to get the Rebels close to the end zone.

The Pioneers extended their lead with a Hayton 4 yard touchdown run and 2 point conversion run to make it 21-7 with 7:27 left in the game.

Tolsia was near midfield on the ensuing possession when lightning was detected with just over 6 minutes left in the contest and the teams were instructed to the locker room.

After about a 45 minute delay the game resumed but not much changed with the final score being 21-7 Wayne.

Senior Bray Mollette, Sophomore Chase Thompson and Freshman Kyndal Kincaid all had fumble recoveries for Tolsia.

#58 Kyndal Kincaid comes away with the fumble to stop the Wayne drive.

The Rebels will host Paden City and Wayne will play their home opener against Scott this Friday night.

Tolsia Head Coach David Thompson

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… We are young and we will have growing pains for sure but I’m really really proud of our effort tonight they never quit and battled the whole night. Give Wayne credit they have a good squad and made a few more plays than we did.”

“… We gave them a few short drives and they made us pay with touchdowns. We have a ton of sophomores getting time and it will pay dividends down the road. You can’t knock the effort everyone gave tonight. Wayne is a big school and it’s a tough opener for us but once we watch the film we should be able to fix the mistakes we made tonight. The crowd was great like it always is. We will get back to work and get ready for another home game next week against Paden City.”
