Lawrence and Elliot Counties (Martha/Isonville area) are home to a well known in Bluegrass musician that many in the area aren’t familiar with.
John Rigsby
According to Bluegrasstoday.com, in an article about a previous band John was part of titled Summertown Road…..”Rigsby is a Grammy award winner for his talent on the mandolin and fiddle. He started out his musical journey with Dwight Whitley and Sideroads while he was still in high school. Rigsby has played with such notables as Ralph Stanley and Melvin Goins. He is cousin to Don and Ron Rigsby.”
He currently plays for Ralph Stanley II. Ralph2.com/about says he is “a man who needs no bio.” John sang Beulah Land at Ralph Stanley’s funeral. You can find this and much more of him on YouTube.
John graduated from LCHS around the mid 90’s. He has released at least one solo album titled “Forks of the Ivy.”
My son Billy who died at age 15 in 1992 used to play with John Risby at the Fallsburg Community Center and they were in FFA Band in High School. John comes from a long line of Musicians!
I didn’t know Billy, but I remember him passing away. So sorry. He was so young still.
I haven’t seen John in many years now. He is a very humble and just all around good guy. I’d like to see him perform at a September fest. If I remember correctly, John’s brother Joe died in an auto accident back in the 90’s. He was very talented too.
The Lazer should start a Lawrence County Talent series featuring one current or former Lawrence Countian each week. It could feature musicians, artists, hobbiests, etc. I’d really look forward to reading this each week. You could ask for commenters to recommend someone they feel should be on the list.
