LAWRENCE COUNTY (November 24, 2020) – Repair work to fix a shoulder break is set to start Monday, November 30, on KY 3 at mile point 31.520, just before Lambert Branch, near the intersection with KY 33.99

Geotechnical Services International (GSI), a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, will build a soil nail wall with drainage to stabilize the shoulder and embankment. This involves inserting slender reinforcing bars (rebar) and hollow drainage bars into pre-drilled holes. These are held in place with pneumatically applied concrete (shotcrete). A flexible reinforcing mesh is put beneath the head plates at the surface and the face is finished with shotcrete.

The project will take two to three weeks. Traffic will be able to get through the work some, with some brief delays.

“We apologize for the temporary inconvenience,” said Tim Spencer, Highway District 12 engineer with the Paintsville Section Office. “We want to finish these repairs before winter weather sets in and causes even more damage. This will make the highway safer and easier to travel.”
