Contractor to Begin Work Monday, May 5

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (May 02, 2025) –Following a recent rockfall in April, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has been actively monitoring a slope along KY 321 in Johnson County. Out of an abundance of caution, KYTC has determined that a precautionary safety project is necessary to address areas that could become hazards in the future.

To prevent the risk of additional rockfalls—especially as colder months approach and freeze-thaw cycles increase—this project is being expedited. Contractors are scheduled to begin work Monday, May 5, with construction expected to take several weeks to complete.

“By addressing the slope now, we can significantly reduce the risk of additional rockfalls during the upcoming fall and winter seasons,” said District 12 Chief District Engineer Mary Westfall-Holbrook. “Protecting drivers and maintaining safe travel routes is our top priority.”

KY 321 will be closed during construction and motorists will need to use alternate routes. KYTC will provide updates throughout the project as work progresses.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down near the work zone, obey posted signs, and be alert for construction crews and equipment.

For the latest updates on this and other projects, follow KYTC District 12 on social media or visit transportation.ky.gov.
