A Pike County man is facing multiple charges of attempted murder of a police officer after, court documents said, he fired approximately 100 rounds at police officers while he held them at bay for an hour and a half.

According to an arrest warrant written by Pike County Sheriff Office detective Brian Conley, on Thursday evening, December 14, at approximately 8:30 P.M., detective Conley, along with deputy Will Adkins and Kentucky State Police troopers Michael McKinney and Izaeyah Dotson attempted to take Robin Bentley, 58,  Peters Branch, of Robinson Creek, KY., into custody in relation to a court-ordered mental petition issued by the Pike County District Court.

Detective Brian Conley wrote that, within a few minutes of the officers’ arrival, Robin Bentley began firing a gun from inside his residence through the windows in the direction of all four of the officers, who were forced to take cover behind their police vehicles.

Robin Bentley, the warrant said, fired approximately 100 rounds over the course of an hour and a half and several of the bullets were close enough for officers to hear them passing by.

During the course of the shooting standoff, detective Brian Conley wrote that Kentucky State Police trooper Sergeant Kenneth Sargent and trooper Daniel Saylor arrived as backup and were also under fire.

Detective Brian Conley’s sheriff department-issued 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe was struck in the hood and in the driver’s side windshield, the warrant said.

Robin Bentley, according to Pike County court documents, was taken into custody by the KSP early Friday morning, December 15, and was transported to and lodged in the Pike County Detention Center in Pikeville, at 3:18 A.M., and was charged on six separate counts of: *Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, and a charge of: *Criminal Mischief. 1st Degree.

Pike County court documents show a not guilty plea was entered on Robin Bentley’s behalf before Pike District Judge Robert Wright later on Friday morning. and that judge Wright ordered that Robin Bentley be held on a $100,000 full cash bond only. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Thursday, December 21, at 1:00 P.M., in Pike County District Court.
