MISSED OPPORTUNITIES DOOM DAWGS IN 14 – 6 LOSS AT BELFRY

Pond Creek, Ky. — It was game of missed opportunities for Lawrence Co. as Belfry was victorious 14-6 in a District 8 showdown Friday at Haywood Stadium. 

Cody Crum, Will McDavid and Luis Chicko swarm the Belfry ball carrier. 

After a scoreless first quarter were the two teams traded punts and turnovers Belfry got on the scoreboard first on a Dre Young 20 yard touchdown run and Nick Savage kicked the extra point kick with 10:05 left in the second quarter. 

Belfry extended their lead when Chase Varney hooked up with Caden Woolum on a 47 yard touchdown and Savage kicked the extra point and the Pirates led 14-0 with 2:12 left before halftime. 

In the fourth quarter the Dawgs finally got in the scoreboard as Cody Crum powered his way into the end zone from four yards out but the PAT was blocked and it was 14-6 Belfry with 8:00 minutes left.

On the ensuing kickoff Talon Pollack recovered the onside kick and the Dawgs had the ball in Belfry territory with a chance to tie but ended up turning in over on downs. 

After the Bulldogs forced a punt Kaden Johnson had a nice return to set up the offense with good field position but once again they turned it over on downs and Belfry ran out the clock.

Even though the Bulldog defense gave up two touchdowns they shut out the potent Pirate offense in the second half and forced a couple of turnovers, a Ty Brooks fumble recovery and a Cody Crum interception.

Cody Crum was the leading rusher with 43 yards, Will McDavid had 36 yards, Caven Williams 3 yards. 

Talon Pollack completed seven passes for 60 yards. 

Carlo Chicko hauled in four passes for 41 yards, Abner Collinsworth caught two passes for 14 yards and Crum caught one pass for 5 yards. 

The Bulldogs ( 4-2 ) will be at home next Friday against Magoffin Co. in another Class 3A District 8 meeting. 

Belfry ( 4-3 ) will be off until Friday October 13th when they travel to Estill Co. ( 3-3 ) for a District 8 matchup.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… This one obviously stings, as much as we respect this program and as long as we been District mates I would be lying if I didn’t say our kids didn’t have this game circled on the calendars and bottom line we didn’t make enough plays to win the ballgame. But I’m very proud of our team’s effort and how they continued to fight through adversity but it didn’t go our way.”

“… Missed opportunities but again very very proud of our bunch tonight. I don’t think they hung their heads at any point in the game and as a coach that makes me very proud. We just kept battling and seemed that we would take one step forward and the two steps back. But that is a testament to Belfry and their abilities. This one will hurt for 24 hours and then we will come back and be ready on Monday.”

“… I’m proud of our whole team, I’m proud of the effort that our guys gave on the defensive side but it’s a team game. Thought Coach Botkins came up with a great scheme this week and I thought our guys executed for the most part. Again they would probably like to have a couple of plays back. Proud of our kids and hurt for our kids at the same time.”
