SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT RELEASES STATEMENT ABOUT REPORTED “INAPPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION” BETWEEN THE TEACHER AND THE STUDENT; REPORT THE SITUATION TO STATE POLICE AND FAMILY SERVICES

An investigation is underway by school system officials, law enforcement, and child services, involving a Magoffin County, Kentucky teacher and a student.
According to a statement from Magoffin County school officials, they confirmed that they investigated a reported inappropriate situation between a middle school teacher and a high school student. They said the incident happened on Tuesday, May 2.
The school system released a statement from Magoffin County Superintendent Chris Meadows on Friday, May 5. The statement said the teacher was no longer employed at the school, and that the situation has been turned over to Kentucky State Police and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Here is the full statement that Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Chris Meadows released to area media outlets:
“We have been informed and have investigated a situation that occurred on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, which involved inappropriate communication between a middle school teacher and a high school student. School personnel immediately turned this matter over to the Kentucky State Police and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services for investigation and initiation of any criminal prosecution.
The teacher in question is no longer employed by Magoffin County Schools.
We take the safety of our children seriously and want their parents and families to know that their safety, education, and best-interests are always our priority.”
The statement did not address the nature of the communication between the teacher and the student. There was also no clarification in the statement on whether the teacher was fired or had quit.
The name of the teacher has not been released by school officials, or from the Kentucky State Police, as well as state family services personnel.
