Jordan McGuire has ‘made a fifference on prople’s lives’
On Thursday July 21 Rotarians held their weekly meeting where announcements were geared around the upcoming Rotary Auction, with donation cards being turned in and more passed out. Everyone is working hard to get as many donations as possible in order to make this year’s auction a success.
The speaker for this week was Jordan McGuire, granddaughter of Rotarian Mary McGuire and member of the Louisa United Methodist Church. Jordan spoke on her yearly mission trip to Guatemala.
All year Jordan does fundraising to make the mission trip possible. The cost of each trip is around $6,000, Jordan said. This was her 5th year, and each time she visits a different village, this year she stayed at an orphanage that provides the kids that stay there schooling and all of their needs.
She takes things such as candy, toys, soccer balls, books, paper and other school supplies, her first year she took 500 pairs of shoes.
“We Americans are spoiled, in our children’s rooms you see multiple things that they have probably played with once and never touched again,” Jordan said. “That’s definitely not the case in Guatemala.” She said the smallest things make them happy.
Jordan became very emotional when she talked about the conditions in which they live, and how humble they are.
“They have their family and God, and are happier than we are,” she said. “They live without electricity, clean water or health care. They have one water hose that the entire village uses.”
She said her goal every year is to build one home per visit, usually for a family that has lost the father and have it worse than others. She has been 5 years and reached her goal EVERY year by building a home for a family.
