LOUISA, Ky. — Marcus Bowen is adding an interesting wrinkle for the May 19, 2026 GOP Primary election in Lawrence County, Ky. He’s challenging for the Coroner’s job here as a write-in candidate. Or Not.
County clerk Chris Jobe said yesterday that there is no write in candidates in any Primary election in Kentucky, however they can be used in the General election if they sign up at the court house. If a candidate fails to register as a write in any votes will not count.
After Jimmy Castle announced he is quitting the race because of health issues last week, Bowen began thinking of the write-in idea which left Sam Michael Muncy as the lone GOP candidate.
A write-in candidate must register at the clerk’s office and will be eligible to collect write-in votes but Jobe says he has not been to the courthouse to file papers. Very few candidates win in Kentucky elections so this may be a first.
Coroner is an important position but there are no training or education requirements, a nagging problem from the state government.
