Gov. Beshear Advises Schools to Remain Closed to In-Person Instruction
Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday advised the commonwealth’s education leaders to keep facilities closed to in-person instruction for the rest of the school year.
“Every health care professional has advised us that this is the right course of action to take,” the Governor said of the state’s continuing efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).
Gov. Beshear noted that same advice was being followed in many states, including Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee.
He said the move is in line with newly released guidelines from the White House as well as Kentucky’s own newly announced benchmarks that the commonwealth must meet in order to start reopening the state’s economy while keeping Kentuckians safe from the novel coronavirus.
“I know for many this is hard,” the Governor said. “We have seniors that were looking forward to an in-person graduation and a prom. I’ve got a son who’s graduating from elementary school and we have every student out there who has lost this time to be able to be with their classmates and there for in-person instruction.”
HERE’S FLETCHER’S COMMENTS: APRIL 22
“….I have felt like this would happen for a couple of weeks, but it still didn’t prepare me for hearing that final decision. I sincerely hurt for all of our students, especially for the Senior Class of 2020.
Mrs. Moore, Mr. Maynard, Mrs. Brady, and I began working on a plan for graduation. While the details are not finalized, we plan to have a modified “drive-in” graduation, likely on May 22nd. We plan to have a Senior parade on May 23rd. We want to complete the ceremony with a “virtual” graduation around June 1st. Again, this is plan is in its infancy, but we want to do something very special for our Seniors. They absolutely deserve it.”
“…The Governor recommended that we complete 1062 hours of instructional time, as required in SB177. Commissioner Brown announced that each NTI Day will be counted as 7 hours of instruction. With this in mind, Lawrence County students will complete their NTI requirements on May 8.
“…All staff members are required to complete their remaining contract days.
“…Most of my classified staff will continue to work in food service. (We are distributing approximately 4000 meals daily.) Teachers will have to evaluate the extent to which the curriculum was covered, make recommendations of starting points in curriculum for the next year, and complete the requirements of closing down a school year.”
I knew our superintendent Robbie Fletcher would & will see our class of 2020 have a very special graduation! One they will make many memories at & also have a Virtual graduation
Our Governor will never be elected to anything again. A parade inside a car will not hurt anyone or anything! This is one of the most outrageous rulings I have ever heard in my entire life!
