BAD TEACHER? LAWRENCE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER ARRESTED FOR ‘INAPPROPRIATE CONTACT’ WITH TEENAGE STUDENT
A Lawrence County High School teacher was arrested after she was discovered and accused of having inappropriate contact with a 15-year-old student, according to court records from Lawrence County District Court.
Amber Dawn Burton, 34, of Louisa, is charged with second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, which is misdemeanor. She was arrested on Thursday, March 2, at 6:30 P.M, by Lawrence County Sheriff Chuck Jackson, at her home in Louisa.
Jackson said today that the investigation into the case is in its “very preliminary” stages and he has no comment.
The incident happened on March 2, after Amber Burton had texted the student in group chats and “provided THC vapes, and got high with (the child),” according to WSAZ-TV.
Amber Dawn Burton has since been released on bond from the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
I guess this is one of the teachers always harping about a raise?
There are bad apples in every profession. Don’t take away the hard work of many because of one bad apple. The majority of teachers are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.
And you must be one cynical fool
This is so sad and totally inappropriate. It’s not like the student population in the entire country is severely behind is history, literature, reading and most certainly STEM courses, while simultaneously noting alarming rates of mental health issues and substance abuse . I have to assume lchs is no different. When I graduated from lchs my first couple years in college was remedial reading and math. Granted my individual case is anecdotal but it occurred nonetheless; I’m also one of the very few grades from my class in the 2000’s to hold a professional doctorate degree. I would like to think that the lchs curriculum has evolved and advanced since my time there but I very much question that now. Instances like this make me have significant reservations about the state of public education nationally for our children. Especially considering Randi Weingarten, the president of one of the largest teacher’s unions in the USA, just a couple years ago was more concerned with keeping teachers out of the class due to covid (despite the fact children survive Covid >99% of the time) than focusing on getting kids back in the classroom. Also, in recent years the rate of teachers being arrested for sexual relationships with their students has skyrocketed. This case just highlights the abysmal state of affairs our children have to face when they go to school. So sad.
Speak for yourself I graduated from LCHS in 2005. I have never had to take a remedial class. I attended Arizona State University graduated with a 4.0 received my Master and currently work for NASA. Please stop trying to make it seem like people from our area follow the same footsteps as Tara Westover. I am not surprised you did not use your real name in the comment. Majority of the people from Lawrence County are good people. There are bad examples of people from every walk of life and profession. People if your reading this do not use your up bringing as an excuse use it to propel you into greatness! Victims always blame there past. Also as a scholar with a doctorate I would expect your sources to be cited. Have a nice day!
You’re.
Well, I wasn’t aware this is a peer reviewed article but if you want sources here they are:
-Decline in American education compared to the other countries: Pew Research Center
Dept of Education
-Rise of mental illness among American youth: NIH, American academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Medicine, CDC, American Psychiatry Association
-Rise of substance abuse among young Americans (again) NIH, CDC, American Academy of Physicians
-OVER 500 (yes 500) teachers arrested for sex crimes with students, Canadian Children’s Rights Council, Reingold Giuffra Ruffo & Plutkin LLP, John Locke Foundation
And I’m sure your name isn’t “citizen Kane rectifier” (since you noted I didn’t use my real name)
And if you’re going to criticize me for a lack of sources then also criticize yourself for lack of proper grammar (and yes I may have some typos myself).
I’m glad you’re Successful and work from nasa that means you can analyze data, or should be able to. And you’re correct, many people from Louisa are fine wholesome hard working salt-of-the-earth type people; but that doesn’t change the fact that also a severe handicap exists to Appalachian youth with lack or access to tools needed to succeed once high school is over; and this case does nothing but pour salt in that already existing wound. That’s why I’m only one of four people to hold a doctorate level degree in my graduating class of 170ish (I believe?) (and I didn’t graduate from LCHS with honors). (Also on a side note my success was a desire to get out of Appalachia, a desire to be self sufficient,, a desire NOT to have to tell my children one day “don’t be like me”, and daily guidance from Jesus Christ) That’s also why once I received my degrees I left the area and now live on the coast. I want (and will provide) my children to have access to more than I did growing up. My reservation with LCHS is, if the professional environment there among staff is so nonchalant that a teacher (albeit a misguided teacher) thinks it’s ok to do drugs with a minor what else is going on that hasn’t come to light yet? “One bad apple” doesn’t create an environment where “that one bad apple” can feel comfortable enough to start flouting such rules as professional distance, and teacher-to-student influence. That tells me there needs to be changes in the teaching environment on the micro and macro level. That’s my view, I never said it was fact just my view. If that bothers you, that’s your problem.
This is the new generation taking over. In ten more years this country will be totally disfunctional. 6 if the dems continue. Society is lowering the standards for everything. Teachers, firefighters, air traffic controllers, elected officials, police, vice presidents, parenting etc… Nowdays the color of your skin means more than whats between the ears. The dumbing down of america for equity. People who read this knows its the truth.
Judging by your punctuation, the “dumbing down” started a while ago.
You are the dumbest sob on here
That’s not very nice.
Judging by your comment you are dumb as hell.
His comments hit the nail on the head. Your sore spot has been activated!
Build them a new school that will fix the problems
How will that fix the teachers? That has to be the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. A building to help fix the teachers inappropriate acts.
Why are they only charging her with a misdemeanor? I thought that would be a felony.
It is a felony!
Shudup dummy.
Look at her past records. Why was she hired in the first place? Lack of options??
What past record?
yes your right
Who wants to be a Teacher when you can get arrested for committing a felony by having the wrong books in your classroom or library. Maybe you’ll be arrested for teaching black American History. The dumbing down of the school system has been going on since for decades. Slashing the civics, Arts, & manipulating History results in a population that can be more easily controlled and made to believe what they’re told instead of what their lying eyes tell them. Wake up.
That sounds just what Fox and Tucker are trying to tell us what happened on January 6th even though we all seen with our own eyes what went on
Here’s one of todays headlines not from the main stream media: Twitter laughs, groans as Jill Biden gives biological male Women of Courage award. GO DEMS !!!! Someone please tell the Democrates what a female is.
Most of the kids nowadays can’t go too kitchen and tell the difference between a lettuce head and a cabbage head don’t believe me ask ten random students get a cabbage head you set one of each in fridge an ask them too get either one 7 out of 10 will bring the wrong one I have do it …. We need to learn kid life’s basics how to plant garden a trade basic street skills I have never need too know advanced math etc we are ahead of our selves basics
If only there was someone at home to help with this lettuce/cabbage debaucle. But oh well, American Idol is on.
Things should have been done many years ago when others got swept under the rug why ruin one when others got away with it just a thought no I’m not saysing it’s right I’m just saying punish accordingly others have skeletons too!
Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? I don’t even know this woman she’s been thrown under the bus without making a comment . Wake up LC wait until all the evidence is collected before dragging this woman thru the mud. Teenagers are capable of anything . Who would send exploit stuff in a group text? Come on LC wait until its investigated.
Haha hillbillies arguing over who is less inbred this is great entertainment
All she needed to say was she was helping him with his issues transitioning and the affects of hormone blockers!
Regarding Indiana standards:
I recently helped a neighbor’s child prepare for standardized testing. To find sample exams at the third grade level I looked at exams from several states. When I compared what third grade students let’s say in Massachusetts with Indiana the difference was significant. Massachusetts student were reading classical literature and biographies which provide not only comprehension but additional learning about historical figures and classical works of literature and poetry whereas the Indiana samples were shorter, easier, “fun” pieces about aliens in a hamburger joint. The level of comprehension required was markedly lower for standards in Indiana. The child was concerned if he failed the test he would have to go to summer school.
